Tenbury 28 June 2025 Competition
Dead low water and bright sun are not an attractive combination at any time on the Teme and apologies from many of the regulars resulted in only two people turning up to fish. Richard and Ed could not overcome the bad conditions and struggled in vain but should be applauded for trying.
Newbridge on Wye 19 June 2025 Visit
Bit of light rain in the morning but not enough to effect the river nor was the wind a problem. There was an almost complete absence of fly life with the natural result that there were few rises. The stretch up and down from the Ithon showed very little evidence of fish life. This was a bit of a puzzle as there seemed to be a fair number downstream. We had a rise of a couple of feet a few days previously which I thought might freshen the fish up but didn't!
Congratulations to Dave Evason for finding the fish and catching them. He caught them all on worm and float on which he is an expert.
Kevin Johnson is no slouch with a worm but could only find small trout apart from the two that were large enough to weigh-in.
A case of better luck next time for the rest of us.
Wicken's Pool 12 April 2025 Silver Fish Contest
The weather continued the pattern of the last few weeks with a cold night and glorious day which didn't suit the carp and made the fishing for small fish hard going.
Dave Evason showed his class by pushing me into second place. Shirley just pipped Dave Hemming by one ounce and had bragging rights by hooking a carp which showed its distain for his light tackle by snapping the hooklength.
We all enjoyed ourselves in the lovely weather and pleasant surroundings of Shirley's lawns.
Wicken's Pool 12 April 2025 Contest
Congratulation to Shirley on a resounding victory. With a near five pounder in the net he put the swim feeder aside and showed the world that he could catch silvers as well. I wish I had been there to see him do that.
Richard got a nice carp and tried for silvers but apparently they didn't like his stale maggots so it made for a very close contest below Shirley in first position.
I'm hoping to be there to do battle in the next competition.
Wicken's Pool 22 March 2025 Contest
Warm and overcast. John had arrived first and scared off a Cormorant which may have affected the fish. If they have been coming regularly most of the medium size fish will have been eaten which would explain the lack of those in the catch. The carp didn't feed much as only the one caught by John on a pellet showed up.
I swapped over at lunch time to fishing very shallow (2ft with the shot about 1foot) and caught very small roach on a size 20 to 21/2lb on a small bread punch - 19 weighed 8oz! I was groudbaiting with liquidised bread which usually brings a carp onto the scene but didn't appear to work this time although others did report seeing them.
John eventually caught a carp of 1lb 12oz while Steve caught two perch one of which weighed 14oz. Richard caught several small perch in the shallow end under the floating catkins (which drove me mad and forced me to move from my original position) and they were considerably larger than my tiny roach!
Dave, Shirley and Kevin didn't trouble the scales although they all are highly competent.
Let us hope that warmer weather bring out some fish for us to catch and that they are all hiding.
